Facts about Belton

Located in Bell County, Belton serves as the county seat. It's also the fifth-largest city in the Killeen-Temple Metropolitan Area. According to the results of the 2020 census, Belton is home to more than 23,000 residents. The Metropolitan Area has a population of more than 450,000. 

What is now Belton was first incorporated as the town of Nolanville in 1850. The name change took place in 1852, renaming the town in honor of Peter H. Bell. For the remainder of the century and into the first decades of the 20th century, the town continued to grow. 

During the period between 1929 and 193, Belton lost half of its population. The opening of Fort Hood nearby led to a resurgence for the city, bringing more jobs to the area and leading to more people moving to the city. Since the beginning of the 21st century, Belton has gained roughly 10,000 residents, and is expected to continue growing.
