Facts about Blanco
Located in a rural area in Blanco County, Blanco has a history that begins in the middle of the 19th century. As of the most recent census, the city has a population of more than 1,600 people. Found in the Texas Hill Country, Blanco has been known as a ranching and cattle community from its earliest years.
While there were some settlers in the area as early as 1853, Blanco began as a town site in 1858. At that time, Blanco County was organized, and the need for a county seat arose. The decision was made to establish a new town on 120 acres supplied by the Pittsburgh Land Company. That same year, the Blanco post office was established and the town received the same name.
While serving as the county seat, the town was not officially incorporated until 1939. The town continued to grow, and sported a hospital, schools, and even a newspaper by 1946. While the population declined for a time during and after World War II, Blanco began to grow again in the 1950s. The current population of 1,600 is the most that the town has ever possessed.
