Facts about Batesville
Located in Zavala County, Batesville is a census-designated place. The latest census indicates the CDP is losing population. As of 2020, 787 people have made their homes in Batesville. This is compared to a population of 1,068 at the time of the 2010 census.
The history of the community dates back to the middle of the 19th century. The first settlements in the area took place in 1860. The Bates family, who played a role in further development, arrived in 1869. For a time, Batesville served as an early seat for Zavala County.
Farming was crucial to the development of the area. In 1876, the damming of the Leona River created an additional 500 irrigated acres. The acreage was divided into a series of small plots, then sold to farmers settling in the area.
The first known school opened in 1884. There was a high school in operation until 1949. In 1973, the Batesville school district consolidated with the district located in Uvalde. Since that time, students living in Batesville have been served by the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District.
